Manhunt on for rapist-child molester freed “in error” in Georgia

-

The authorities are in the process of searching for the inmate after he walked free, through a lucky accident, the state Department of Corrections said.

A search has begun in Georgia for a rapist and child molester who has been sentenced to life imprisonment and was released “through an error,” the authorities revealed.

The prisoner, Tony Maycon Munoz-Mendez, was being kept at Rogers State Prison in Reidsville, Ga. It is 65 miles away from Savannah. The convict walked away on Friday close to 11:30 a.m., revealed the Georgia Department of Correction.

The department is amongst the country’s most significant prison systems with close to 52,000 inmates, revealed his release in a statement three days after the incident. It failed to explain or detail how the error had taken place or why it was announced so much later.

A spokeswoman on behalf of the department, Lori Benoit, claimed that it was reviewing the circumstances during his release and ensure to have a thorough “internal investigation.”

“The top priority of the Georgia Department of Corrections is to catch back the offender as fast as possible, and at this point, we have all resources put up on the search,” Ms Benoit said.

Online corrections records have revealed that Mr Munoz-Mendez, 31, was found guilty and facing life in prison for rapes that took place in 2010 and 2012, as well as severe child molestation cases in 2010.

John Warr, the Gwinnett County lawyer who took the case, said that Mr Munoz-Mendez had started sexually harass the 7-year-old daughter of his girlfriend at the time, which ended in rape a few years later.

Mr Warr, who was handling the case on behalf of the convict Mr Munoz-Mendez in 2015, revealed in the call on Tuesday that he heard about the accidental error after coming across an article online.
