Avenue 5 is a space-based comedy show 40 years in the future when the solar system is everyone’s oyster. Hugh Laurie will star as the Captain, and with him in charge, nothing can go wrong.
HBO has already released a first teaser trailer for the series. Besides having the ever-reliable asset of star Hugh Laurie in full House-evocative snark mode, the series brandishes a fascinate Star Trek meets The Love Boat hybrid concept, which – wittingly or not – resembles a 1994 SNL sketch in which host Patrick Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Love Boat: The Next Generation. – That’s a good thing, by the way!
The cast of Avenue 5 consists of Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Ethan Phillips and Himesh Patel. Kyle Bornheimer and Jessica St. Clair will recur on the series.
The Crew of Avenue 5 consists of Laurie and Suzy Nakamura (The West Wing) are the show’s leads, and star alongside Rebecca Front (The Thick Of It). Silicon Valley’s Zach Woods, Josh Gad (Frozen), Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW), Lenora Crichlow (Sugar Rush) and Yesterday’s Himesh Patel are all series regulars.
Avenue 5 is set to hit the premiere on HBO in January 2020.Sky Atlantic is likely to broadcast it in the UK due to its ongoing deal with HBO for exclusive rights to its lineup.
In the upcoming show, Laurie plays Ryan Clark, the “charming and in-control” American Captain of Avenue 5, the cruise ship that finds itself lost at sea, er, space, with not a lot of experts to guide it safely anywhere
“It’s set in the world of space-based tourism about 40 years in the future,” Iannucci told NME. “It’s not flying cars and stuff; it’s about what happens when a lot of people just have to get on with each other in space.”
Iannucci told the outlet that he focused on the futuristic sci-fi genre for his new project because “If I look at the present, I lose my sense of humour, so I’m looking to take stories from other periods and show how the present is reflected in them.”
