Most of the times, a good movie or a series can also be “food to the soul”, and if you are a freak like me, am sure you understand what I mean. And, looking at various movies in diverse genres being released almost every week, you could be confused somewhat, of which one to try out. Well, “13 reasons why” is a must-watch for you!
The story behind this mind-blowing series was initially written in a book by Jay Asher in 2007. It is a story of a young high school student(Hannah) as she sinks into despair brought on by betrayal and bullying, culminating with her suicide.
She lists and details the thirteen reasons, why she was driven and forced to end her life in an audio diary which is mailed to a friend two weeks after her death. This movie portrays the terrible experiences of most young adults, in different social settings, who are maltreated as weak and inferior. It occurs mostly in schools, and although disciplinary measures are put in place to put an end to this menace, it grows rampant day by day.
Since the release of the book, supports from different sectors especially in education, claim that its use in school anti-bullying efforts, benefits young adult readers who are close in age to the characters in the novel; the authors encourage high schools to adopt the book as a means of starting conversations on bullying.
More generally, “13 Reasons Why” has been hailed by adults outside the classroom as being a supplement to local initiatives in starting the conversation between parents and their children about suicide. Although, because of it’s a high rate of sexual content, questions as to whether readers should be forewarned, comes into light.
